Now a days we hear a lot about positive parenting in our circle. What is positive parenting and why is it important? Positive parenting is all about taking an approach for child-rearing that is sensitive to children’s need and it reflects our beliefs and values as a parent in their behaviour. We help our kids to develop good behaviour and learn positive habits.

Each child is unique, and they grow and learn at his/her own pace. As a parent we make a conscious effort to celebrate our children’s effort and appreciate their abilities. We need to connect with our children and have eye contact while talking or while helping our children. Every child communicates his/her needs differently. Understand it and make them feel that they are important and cherished.  Parenting is a combination of nurture and structure. Our children need guidance for age- appropriate behaviour. We need to set the limits.We must maintain a balance between strict and lenient, so that not only they learn rules but can also learn from their mistakes. Instead of harsh discipline and punishment for misbehaviour, positive parenting focus on positive discipline.But for that we need to recognize and regulate our own feelings and behaviours before responding to our children. We must be their role models. Apologize when we are wrong and help children learn how to do this as they grow older. We should practice the skill of listening and support them whenever required.

Positive parenting approach teaches children independence which develops their self-esteem and self-efficacy as well as their decision-making skills. Positive parenting is going to build trust between children and parents. We know that parenting is challenging, but the effort that we put will be rewarded in the long run. The way we connect with our children has wide-ranging consequences on their mental health, self-control and relationships.
